ニュースのトピックが生成・消滅する様子について時系列で大規模に調べた研究である。

2008年に行われたUS大統領選の最中の三ヶ月についてのべ160万サイト、9,000万のオンライン記事・ブログについて、独自のアルゴリズムを利用してニュースを同定し、それを時系列でカウントアップした。
これをみると最初のニュースが報道されてから、追従者がどのようなタイムスケールで増え、そしてメインストリームに至ったあとに、話題から逸れていくかというのがよくわかる。
なるほどね、大きく話題になったトピックでも賞味期限は二週間程度、ピークでは数日程度なんだな。だいたいのトピックは一週間程度しかもたないんだ。おそらくこのウィークリー単位というのは、我々の生活が一週間単位で区切られているというのに依存しているんだろうな。

グーグルのアラートに「チベット」をセットしてあるが、いまだにチベット関係のニュースが流れて来る。それと、無数に発生している「ニュースに見えるモノ」も実は同じ系列の上で起きていることだったりする場合も多い。そういうのをきちんと整理するという方法...
